How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer in Brisbane

Brendan Grimes • September 5, 2025

When the Queensland summer hits, your AC becomes a necessity.

With high humidity and long heatwaves, ensuring your AC system is clean and operating effectively will make all the difference between staying cool or sweating it out.

If you live in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, here’s a simple guide to preparing your air conditioner for the hot months ahead.

1. Clean or Replace Your Filters

Air filters are the first thing to check for dust, dirt, and allergens. Over time, they clog up and force your system to work harder, increasing energy costs and reducing airflow.

For split system air conditioners: clean filters every couple of months during summer. Frequency of cleaning will change from space to space.

For ducted systems: schedule professional air conditioning servicing in Brisbane or the Gold Coast to ensure filters are replaced or cleaned.

2. Check the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit needs plenty of airflow to work efficiently. Clear away any debris that may block the ventilation. Ensure there’s at least half a meter of space around it for best performance. It can also be important to check for any rattling or vibrating noises. Such things could indicate motor issues or loose part.

3. Inspect Airflow Indoors

Ensure vents are clean and open, as blocked vents and registers can restrict cooling. If you notice a vent sweating, it could indicate a blocked coil or restricted airflow in the indoor unit. This will cause loss of energy efficiency and higher power usage. In this case, it’s best to have a qualified technician inspect and resolve the issue before it leads to bigger problems.

4. Book a Service

The best way to keep your air conditioner running efficiently is with a service before summer. A licensed Brisbane air conditioning technician will:

  • Clean filters by brushing, vacuuming or washing.
  • Clean condensate drain lines by flushing.
  • Test indoor/outdoor unit connections.
  • Test the thermostat operation. Check for fault codes.
  • Identify and fix small issues before they turn into breakdown or failure.

This not only improves efficiency but also extends the life of your system. Call to book a service.

5. Check Your Thermostat Settings

Set your air conditioner to a comfortable temperature—generally 23–25°C is recommended for energy efficiency in Brisbane’s humid climate. Avoid extreme settings when possible, especially if your system is old. Older systems can have motor failure and pressure issues under extreme circumstances and temperatures.

6. Consider an Upgrade if Needed

If your system is over 10–12 years old, struggles to cool down your home, or breaks down, it may be more cost-effective to replace it. Modern split and ducted systems are quieter, more energy efficient, and designed to perform better in the hot Queensland climate.
